Guidelines

We welcome comprehensive use of English and other languages. If your piece contains non-English languages, please include an English translation. Though we are an international magazine, our staff’s common language is English.

We also welcome works previously published elsewhere.

  • If a piece you submit has been accepted by another publication, we will credit the other publication.
  • If we accept your piece before it has been accepted by another publication, we request that the other publication credits Apricity Magazine upon publication of the piece.
  • If a piece you submit is accepted by a publication that claims sole publishing rights, please let us know so that we may remove it from consideration. (Do note, however, that most publications allow re-prints as long as the original publisher is credited.)

Works are considered on a rolling basis. All pieces submitted will be considered for online publication.  After the deadline for print publication passes, we will consider all pieces submitted before the deadline that were accepted for online publication for print publication.

Please note that Apricity Magazine is not active during the summer (from late May to late August). Any pieces submitted during this time will not be evaluated until the fall.

We will not tolerate any form of plagiarism.

Disclaimer

Submitting to Apricity Magazine is an automatic agreement to our guidelines and our terms of Author’s Rights. We reserve the right to publish content submitted to us in both our online and print magazines. We will hold all admitted online content for 2 years before removing it from our site due to online space capacity, although we will create a public record of published works and authors so that authors may still cite Apricity Magazine. Currently, admitted works for both online and print will still be online for a time period longer than 2 years.

Performing Arts Submission Guidelines

We accept submissions from the performing arts, including but not limited to original music, short film, short play, and dance. Please upload or include a link (of a Youtube video, a webpage, or a Google Drive file) to your submission as well as a brief description of your piece and how you arranged your performance. DISCLAIMER: Apricity Magazine has only recently started accepting video games as of October 2020. As such, please note that while we are avid appreciators of games, we are not industry experts and will be relying on subjective experience and opinion to inform most of our decisions That said, we will have certain guidelines, outlined below, that will help direct our votes.

Video Game Submission Guidelines
Since this is a new category, we are still experimenting with the best way to accept submission materials. For now, we require every video game to be finished when submitting this form, and for you to provide either a) a tutorial or example level or b) a link to the full game. If the game is not playable on Mac or Microsoft devices, then please provide a five-minute play-through video of any part of the game. All entries must have a 1-2 page rationale attached. This rationale should include a basic explanation of the game and its mechanics, and anything else that will better help us understand how this game works as art. Art here can apply to the narrative within the game, the visual aspects of it, or anything else that provokes further thought or emotion within the player.
Here are a few guidelines we'll be using to rate submissions:

  1. Mechanics: How do the players interact with the game? In your rationale, describe the goal of the game and how players will achieve it.
  2. Story: What sequence of events unfold in the game and how effectively do they contribute to the overall story?
  3. Aesthetics: How does the game engage the player's senses? What is the player's experience of the game like? You can include screenshots in your rationale if you wish.
  4. Technology: Does your game utilize any new technology, or old technology in a new way? More simply, what platform does your game run on? The latter will not be used to judge your game; it'll simply be informative for our analysis.
